Volunteer!

CHS PTSA, working to provide youth members with the opportunity to make a difference by developing leadership skills, learning about the legislative process, increasing their self-esteem, and contributing to the school. In turn, adult members gain a new perspective for program development, as well as acquire a better understanding of the youth of today. Together we are a strong advocate for the education and well-being of every child!

Parent Book Club

Parent Book Club Meets August 30, Announces Dates, Books for 2011-12

August 5, 2011 – TEMECULA, CA – Like to read? Want insight into the same books your middle or high school student is reading? The Parents Reading Core Literature (PRCL) Group will hold its first discussion of the 2011-12 school year at 9:30 AM on Tuesday, August 30, in Rm. 324 at Chaparral High School,  27215 Nicolas Road, Temecula.

Facilitated by former director, curriculum. instruction, and assessment, Dianne Vaez, now on special assignment at Chaparral High School, the group will be discussing Their Eyes Were Watching God, the best-known work of African American author Zora Neale Hurston. Written in 1937 and set in Florida in the early 20th century, the novel garnered attention and controversy at the time of its publication. Since then, it has come to be regarded as a seminal work in both African American and women’s literature. It was included in TIME magazine’s 100 Best English-language Novels from 1923 to 2005, and is one of the novels on the district’s 11th grade core literature list.

PRCL books and discussion dates are Place Where the Sea Remembers by Sandra Benitez (9th grade core literature selection) onSeptember 27  and Lord of the Flies by William Golding (10TH grade) on October 25. There are no meetings scheduled for November and December; books for the remainder of the school year will be announced

Parents Reading Core Literature is a partnership between the school district and the Temecula Valley Council PTA. Goals of the program include increasing parental involvement at the middle and high school level where it often wanes; prompting family discussions about books; and encouraging reading for enjoyment.

“The purpose of Parents Reading Core Literature is to provide parents with insight into what their students have read or may be reading and hopefully, to foster a dialogue between parents and their students,” said Kathy Fink, TVC PTA president. .
